She Survived and is Highly Annoyed

I spoke to College girl right before the storm. My last words were to keep us up to date. I think she took that as either "I wish they would leave me alone" Or "They will know I'm alive when I call next week for money".

Yesterday morn I was online watching the storm and checking the local weather stations for wind speeds and the Progress Energy power outage maps to see how her area fared. The winds were down but as expected there were lots of power outages.

We had no news so the wife finally texted her and we got a reply of "I'm fiiiinnne".

Later she called to say the stoplights were out but her apartment still had power. "See, I didnt need to come home" From now on she is going to be one of those that doesnt leave because she survived Irene.

In other touching survival news My oldest daughter's friend posted this on Facebook.

The old American resolve lies on.

I hope everyone else survived the storm unscathed.

Haha, she should make a t-shirt ("I survived Irene") and wear it when she's being interviewed on the news for not leaving the next hurricane.

Glad to hear no one needed a raft.

I think there's something in human beings that really WANTS to be challenged. Last winter we had a snowstorm that dropped almost two feet of snow. The neighbors pitched in together to clear the way, baked goods were presented, cases of beer produced. It was a good time.

I wish I understand all the fuss. Go to Texas, or Louisiana....Florida or Mississippi and see what a real hurricane looks like.

I love that.

In all seriousness, I have been through real hurricanes (lived in FL for 7 years)We had the windows open here, as we had hardly any rain, and I had to keep reminding Tony that it was NOT SAFE to go walking around outside.

*sigh*

Until you've been in a boarded up house, mid day, in the pitch black, hearing you neighbor's roof be torn off and trees falling all around you... they just don't get it.

It is embarassing to watch the news. The fuss they make. Now the media seems to be a bit disappointed there was no more damage than there was.

We went thru Hugo several yrs back and saw the damage it did 150 miles inland. Cant imagine a big one at ground zero. I would have preferred her come home.

I"m worried the stoplights went out - now that seems dangerous!

So funny how at the college age we forget who is paying the bills because we feel so independent in our apartments with our new fancy roommates.

I'm afraid I gently bit the hands that fed me far more often than I care to say in my college years.

I'm glad she is safe.

Living in Louisiana hurricanes are all too real but we've never left for one. My husband was raised down the bayou in a town called Cut Off - his family never left either. When Gustav hit that was the first time I've ever heard him say "We should've left". Scared the crap out of me.

I love that picture, saw it on my FB too. I can easily foresee myself getting the "I'm fiiiiinne" from my loving daughter, when she goes to college. Le sigh.
