Dear Lord, Thank You For Your Blessings

200 feet is all it is from the garden to the kitchen.  I walk out there every nite when I get home from work to survey my little crop. Last nite we picked our first two squash . The wife sliced them, battered them and fried them up for a fantastic meal. We have been anticipating this day for a month since we planted the garden. Is amazing how good fresh squash tasted. Paired with oven baked chicken and garlic mashed taters it was a great meal. We are looking forward to our tomatoes turning red in a week or so. The zucchini squash aint far behind. We planted 2 hills but then had 3 volunteer plants come up. We will be loaded with zucchini come summer. The cukes were planted a tad late so we will have to wait a while on them.

The larger squash in the middle was named Billy Bob Joe Jr. by the little one. ???? Don't ask! He was bigger last nite and the first picked. Lots more little ones on the way it appears.

This is our scarecrow. Looks real huh? The tomato plants are taller than she is now. We have had to add baskets to some of the shoots that got out of the main baskets. Hopefully they bear as good as they have grown.

The neighbors garden is right across the fence. They always do well. They make a lot of spaghetti sauce. He borrows my tiller each year (so does my next door neighbor and my dad and anyone else that needs it. Tools aint no good just sitting there.) so this year he brought me a 1/2 load of mushroom mulch. What a great deal that was.

That's it for the tour.

Have a great day.

That is very cool. Funny how the tomato is now taller than your daughter!

Would love to have a garden some day. My grandparents used to have one and when we visited as kids we'd help them with it. Fresh vegetables are delicious.

I'd like to borrow the tiller.

What I need to do is go plant some veggies. The herbs are all back except for the basil. The blueberries are about to change color. That's all so far.

I'll send you my address so you can ship the fresh tomatoes....

Wish I had started earlier with the planting but by August I should have delicious watermelon! Oh well, live and learn.

Bon Apetit!

Billy Bob Joe Jr... :)

Growing your own crop always seems to make things taste better.

My strawberry plants are blooming like mad right now, and I am looking forward to a bumper crop. However, I'm sure that the birds in our neighborhood are looking forward to it just as much.

-- She's probably the cutest scarecrow I've ever seen --

Have a great weekend.

Planting, tending, harvesting and eating your own food is wonderful beyond words. Most people either don't know or care where their food comes from. Cudos for ALL the farmers in the world, whether it's on a huge scale or in your own backyard. There is nothing like fresh product right?

...and little A is not so little anymore....look at that sweet face~

ps...can you tell I'm a Ag. momma?...lol

Jolene, We had such an early spring that the strawberries were about a month early. Not sure if folks are still getting them here or not. They were good tho.

Hope yours puts on good.

Neighborhood gardens are the best way to get a good crop. They can cross pollinate. It's the only way I was able to get corn as a kid. :)

I just finished stringing the peas in Youngest's patch of a garden. His carrots didn't fair well, and I'm afraid the cukes didn't either. I'm thinking sometime next week we'll go and get some plants to grow instead of seed...

And maybe this year, he'll actually eat them. :)

this may be hard to believe but it's still too cold and damp here to plant...gah, another short summer. Your crops look mighty healthy, nothing better!

If my darling family leave any, we'll be making strawberry shortcake this weekend :)

Dracen,my youngest, has always been into gardening and loves helping his popaw. This year he decided he wanted his own garden so Charlie borrowed Popaw's tiller, tilled him up a place and then we had so much going on that Dracen just decided that would be too much work anyway and said he could just keep helping Popaw. Oh well...maybe next year!
